So my interest in cars recently came about when I saw our family's old 510 rusting in a field for the past 25 years, until 2009 when I decided to take it on as my restoration project. Interior Dash & Pedal Removal (4/15 - 4/26 - 2012)

I haven't posted in a couple weeks but here are some pictures from a week and a half ago till now.  The dash is my main focus right now and it's a pain working in such tight areas of the car.  Anyway this is what has been going for nearly the last two weeks.  I really don't think my A/C is going to survive this rebuild.  I'm still saving all the parts just in case though.  You never know.





More electrical labeling.  Seems like those wires never end.  I can't even imagine working on a present day car.



Finally I removed the dashboard!!!!!  Now moving on to other stuff like removing the A/C box fan blower.




Now with that out of the way, I can see I'm going to need to scrape more of the sound deadening material there.

Rebuild-able??


I finally removed the clutch and brake pedal.  I had to use a #17 on my socket wrench set to remove a bolt on each side.  The clutch came out easy.  The brake pedal was not so easy.  The bolt looks like it's screws out clockwise.  I labeled this as the reverse brake pedal bolt.  It took a few turns till I realized that I was crushing the washer beneath.  *note to self - it's probably the only bolt on the car that's different.

So here is how it looks now.  after I take everything out, I'm really going to start cleaning things up inside.  I'm also going to need to figure out how to make a storage space for all these parts.

A Little Motivation

            Money is certainly a huge motivator but I also draw motivation from other areas as well.  Well let's also call it inspiration.
           I was recently on a Datsun forum lurking on the build threads and seeing some real pieces of work.  Guys that are SOOOO detailed in making sure that parts are polished to shine if anyone ever looked in that spot.  That is exactly how I want my build to move, at a million miles an hour and making updated posts like everyday of my progress.  Unfortunately that's not what's going on.  I did, however, manage to spend an hour or two in the garage tonight and thought I might try to spruce things up.  I planned to carefully use an angle grinder on the under engine dust cover.  I should have planned to hit the garage earlier because the angle grinder is just so loud to be running at 10pm.  I really don't want to get complaints from neighbors about stuff like that.  Well I decided to sand by hand with 80 grit sandpaper....a little progress but not as much as I would have liked.
            An hour went by with little progress.  'Who am I kidding?!'  I really need a disk sander, so I see that the Harbor Freight website has one for about $49.00.  =(  That's about 30 more than what I have in my wallet.  I'm also needing a new weed wacker/edger.  Seems that our little Black and Decker weed trimmer only has a 10 min battery life on it now.  Doesn't do me any good.  I also received a quote from a Car Restoration place today and they told me for an average car to get bead blasted, it will cost close to $2000.  They also do metal fabrication for a rate of $95 an hour.  I wonder what I can get for a kidney....just kidding.                                    
            I searched all over the web and to my knowledge there is only one place in California in the town of Santa Ana, that chemical dips cars.  The only problem is that people would complain of acid seeping through the cracks throughout the years and people would need new paint jobs after a while.  ....meanwhile, my quest to defeat rust continues.

Here's a cool video to keep you all entertained, of these guys in the New York state area that uncover a Pontiac GTO that's been sitting for 30 years (sounds pretty familiar...yes?). I think the tow truck driver looks like Christopher Walkin.  Yes, No?  I know it's old but still a cool vid.  Unfortunately I can't find any updates of the car.  The entire video is them pulling the car on the trailer.  How cool though to find a GTO in the woods.

Saran Wrap and A Thursday Old School Meet

Just like the title says.  I was basically driving by and saw this.  Took a couple of pics. It was a really good meet last Thursday.  I really wish more S30/S130 owners would start showing up out of the wood work.  Still a good turnout even with slight overcast and a bit chilly.  Good time with good folks and nice rides.




Oh, I before going to the meet, I rolled over to 5&aDime and picked up a few tees.  I did n't take a picture of the shoulder to shoulder crowd but I did happen to take a picture of the DJ doing his thing.



^I've  always had a soft spot for Sentras and this one sounded super mean, ...also fitted with a roll cage.

I love it when old school rides other than Datsuns show up.  This Corona is well loved and shows.

^GC10 Hakosuka.  Can anyone say that they get tired of seeing Skylines?  I don't know anyone.  I love em' all old and new.




I wanted to show you guys my friend's 510 wagon.  I took a pic of his mirror because these are not 510 mirrors but actually mirrors from a BMW 2002.  Looks like a perfect fit.


^A super mean sounding Celica.  The motor does not match the rear tires. ....just take my word for it.
